ABOUT THE THERAPIES HAMPSTEAD HEALTH PRACTICE OFFER

Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a primary health care system, complementary to other medical practices. It is suitable for almost anyone and can contribute to the treatment and management of a wide range of conditions. Osteopaths primarily work through the neuro-musculo-skeletal system, mostly on muscles and joints, using holistic and patient-centred approaches.

A core principle behind osteopathy is the idea that the body is an integrated and indivisible whole, and contains self-healing mechanisms that can be utilised as part of the treatment. No part of the body works, or can be considered, in isolation. Relevant psychological and social factors also form part of the process of patient diagnosis.

The key tools for osteopathic diagnosis include listening to the patient's history, examining muscles and joints and observing movements. X -rays, scans and other clinical investigations are also used if required. A wide range of gentle, non-invasive manual techniques such as deep tissue massage, joint articulation and manipulation are applied therapeutically.

You do not need the referral of a doctor to be seen by an osteopath, although some patients do come for osteopathic treatment following GP advice.

What to expect from the consultation:

Osteopaths treat the whole person so during the first consultation your osteopath will ask you a lot of questions to gain a good understanding of your case. The case history is followed by a thorough physical examination in order to achieve a diagnose.

Treatment techniques that may be used during a first or subsequent consultations include a wide range of gentle, non-invasive applications such as deep tissue massage, joint articulation and manipulation.  If appropriate, you may also be given advise about lifestyle issues, such as exercise, diet or work posture, which may help you.

Some patients need only one appointment; others may have a course of therapy or return periodically for the long-term management of a condition. Normally the treatment of a patient is determined according to their progression rather than the prescription of a set number of treatment sessions.

In the returning appointments, there will be some brief questions, in order to assess the progression of the symptoms and a quick examination, but the most of the appointment will focus on treatment.

The Bowen Technique

The Bowen Technique is a gentle hands-on remedial therapy suitable for all age-groups, including new-born babies and the very elderly.

Subtle but dynamic rolling movements are performed over muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissue at precise points on the body.

These rolling movements do not cause adjustments in themselves but rather are signals to the body to make the adjustments necessary to restore balance.

The process releases energy, sending impulses to the brain to trigger the body's own healing systems.

There is a few minutes break between the moves in order to allow the body to interpret the signal and respond to it - begin the self-healing process.

The moves may help divert energy from stress-loading areas of the body to areas where the energy is needed. By releasing stress at a very deep level, via its calming effect on the Autonomic Nervous System, Bowen stimulates the body to realign, addressing imbalances in functions and chemical composition and, as far as possible, restoring homeostasis (physiological equilibrium).

This remarkable technique can be quick and effective in helping the following:

 Muscular and skeletal problems in neck, shoulder, hip, knees, ankle and back, including sciatica

 Frozen shoulder, tennis and golf elbow, R.S.I. and carpal tunnel

 Whiplash and sports injuries

 Problems with posture and body alignment

 Migraine and recurring headaches

 Bell's Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease and the difficulties suffered by stroke victims

 Respiratory, bronchial and related conditions such as hay-fever and asthma

 Digestive conditions such as kidney problems, IBS, diverticulitis, colitis and Crohn's Disease

 High blood pressure

 Arthritis

 Hormonal, pregnancy and fertility problems

 Stress management, ME, fatigue and sleep problems.

Bowen can be of assistance in many cases of emotional stress, where relaxation is a prime factor in easing pain and anxiety. It is also often a great help in improving the quality of life for those who are terminally ill.

Bowen has a particularly strong record of success in the treatment of back pain, which is responsible for some 14 million working days lost every year in Britain. It regularly provides relief to sufferers for whom conventional treatment has failed to help. A national study, carried out by the Bowen Therapists’ Professional Association (BTPA) in the summer of 2006, showed that 95% of back pain sufferers experienced either complete relief or a marked improvement, after a series of no more than three Bowen treatments.
